China Chokes in OT vs. Spain
This afternoon in Beijing (or 5-7AM ET), after being ahead by an average of 10 points for most of the game, China let their lead slip away and were forced into an overtime with Spain. After that it was all Spain, ending with the Chinese team missing several desperation shots in the closing seconds. Final score: 85-75. This was possibly one of the hottest matches yet, but people in the United States could only watch it live online. China is now 0-2 in the preliminary round, but still has a chance to make the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, a picture of Spain’s basketball team that was leaked on Sunday is causing some controversy.
Every member of the team posed “slanty-eyed”! So far there haven’t been any noticable implications, but it may ultimately ruin Spain’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics, which Chicago is also bidding for. It’s just another addition to Spain’s recent history of racism in sporting events.
Update: The game was available in the U.S. on the Olympic Basketball channel(Satellite/Digital Cable). Spain hosted the 1992 Olympics just fine, but times have changed and Spain now has one of the highest immigration rates in Europe. It remains to be seen if Spain gets to host the 2016 Olympics whether or not there would be racism there, but as the saying goes, a few rotten apples can spoil the bunch.
Update 2: The Spanish Basketball Federation has released a statement. Pau Gasol has offered an apology to anyone who feels offended by the picture. Gasol also says it was a “a bad idea” and that it wasn’t intended to be offensive or racist.

I know a white american girl 28, who said the same thing about spain. she told me, its the rudest place on earth, and she hated it. I am from Pakistan. I also had a friend from Wales, i used to tango dance with his girl friend. He said the exact same thing, people in Spain very rude, and he hated it there. My brother, did not say much, he said Spain was like any other European city, and he left in 4 days. Overall, i have heard negative things about Spain. I recommend Brazil, Dubai, Iceland, nice people there, you will like it.
I spent years in Spain (& UK & USA) and Spain is definately the most insular & racists of the three. It really sucks balls. The spanish are spiteful little people, full of arrogance and bile. As a Spaniard (and a rational, affable human being, just as most of my fellow countrymen, much to the disbelief/discontent of some) I find the comments posted here not only grossly offensive, but also extremely paradoxical.
It is really beyond me how people who take pride in criticising racism (the negative discrimination arising from attributing certain negative traits to individuals based on their ethnic origins and/or their external appearance) can in turn fall pray to XENOPHOBIA (a very similar moral vice this time associated with nationality, not race) against us Spaniards AS A WHOLE, the “swarthy, cruel foreigers par exellence” as it seems. I can only attribute it to incoherent reasoning probably prompted by some sort of irrational spite, of the same kind as some of the comments here have attributed to Spanish people.
There are 46 million of us. Some are bound to be moronic enough to be racist, but saying we are by definition a racist nation is a flabberghasting distortion of a society that overall, and according to most, is among the friendliest, most easy going and welcoming in the world. XENOPHOBIA AND PREJUDICE IS JUST AS BAD AS RACISM.
For those of you who have been to Spain (or claim to have been): if you go to a country whose ways and customs you do not understand very well, try to look at things without prejudice, with an open mind lest you end up giving off bad vibes and getting them back in return. And, for goodness sake, if you refuse to understand that country and cannot even make some friends to relate to that would prevent you from getting too spiteful, try by all possible means not to stay there for “years” like “I-cannot-spell-and the-only-thing-that-rings-a bell-about-Spain is-Franco” guy above.
